“If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.”

John 14:15, LSB

What are the commandments Jesus is talking about here? The Law of Moses? We know that Jesus fulfilled those because we are unable to keep the Law; if we could, Jesus would not have had to die. Remember the two commands that Jesus recites from Deuteronomy in Mark 12: “Love God with all your heart, mind, soul, and strength, and love your neighbor as yourself.” Our Lord desires that we remember to be in unity in our faith. We know the struggle that this causes for all of us in the Christian faith. Humanity isn’t often in unity. In our love for Him, Christ calls us to be different and not caught up in the things of this world, which often divide and cause us to do things at the expense of our neighbor. Our Lord calls us to walk with forgiving hearts, ready to give mercy and grace to those we encounter. Instead of being constantly divided by worldly things, seeking unity in Christ our Lord in our service to one another. All this for the purpose of seeking and leading others into our Lord’s peace.

Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
