Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.

2 Corinthians 5:17, LSB

How often do the mistakes of our past haunt us? We all fall short and don’t always do things the way we know we should do them. We lose sight of what is right and sometimes do what is expedient. In Christ, we are promised that we have been made new creations. Our sin is not acceptable to God, and we are incapable of entering into His presence with any of it upon us. Jesus doesn’t make it alright to sin, but He forgives us of our sin and takes away the stain. We are made new, not so we can just go and live and do as we have always done, but we are made different. Not that we won’t sin again, but we are to walk differently and seek not to sin again. When we do sin, we can come to our Lord, confess, and know we are forgiven. The old things that trouble us are meant to be taken away and we can move forward anew. Satan will try to lead us away through guilt and shame, but our Lord calls us to cling to Him and know that He is there to renew us and offer us a better alternative. There is no need of guilt or shame just a renewed hope and promise as the past sin is removed and we can walk in the cleansing waters of our baptism. In Christ, we are made new as we have been washed and claimed as His own and in this, know His peace.

Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
