“You shall not swear by My name falsely, and so profane the name of your God: I am the LORD.”
Leviticus 19:12, ESV
We hear it often, “I swear to God!” or “ I swear on my kids!” or “ I swear on my mother!” It is common to make an oath in desperation, and as long as it is true, there is no dishonor in it. Sadly, these oaths are often sworn to cover up a lie or misdeed. Jesus later tells us not to take oaths like these, but simply to answer yes or no honestly. If we keep our word and are known for our honesty, then no further qualifier is needed. This doesn’t mean that we are doing wrong when we take an oath in life, just that we should limit the oaths we take to highlight our allegiance to our Lord and to stand and give testimony that would be honoring to God. Let all of our words be words that honor our Lord and utilize His name to honor and praise Him. In this way, we are a light to those who walk in darkness and can guide others into His peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
