1 Corinthians 8:5–6, LSB
For even if there are so-called gods whether in heaven or on earth, as indeed there are many gods and many lords, yet for us there is one God, the Father, from whom are all things and we exist for Him, and one Lord, Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we exist through Him.
In life and in the world, there are many things that people place their trust and hope in, and there are things that indeed hold sway over people’s hearts, yet they hold no real power. These things are created and mortal, not eternal and all-powerful. We have only one God who entered creation through His Son and took upon Himself all sin for all time. Christ alone can save, and in His sacrifice for us, He secured for us our eternal salvation, which would separate us from the paradise our Lord has in store for all of those whom He has chosen. It is not something we earn, nor is there any way we may merit it in any fashion, yet we receive it and are forever restored in His power and love for all eternity. This is the promised hope of our God, who is eternal and all-powerful. Our God, who created all things and whose heart is faithful for His chosen, and His promises are unbreakable. It is through our Lord and Him alone that anyone may truly find peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
