He said to them, “Because of your little faith. For truly, I say to you, if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you.”
Matthew 17:20, ESV
When confronted with their inability to cast out a demon our Lord Jesus responded to the Apostles about the power of faith. We underestimate the power of faith in our lives and what obstacles it can help us overcome. Sometimes people interpret this as a Word in which we may seize power, but this is not what Jesus says. Faith is transformative. It begins by transforming us and then through us, we are a force to be reckoned with in our communities and, particularly, against the great deceiver. It isn’t a power that can do anything against the nature of our Lord, but when we have just a little faith it wouldn’t be within us to do so. Faith gives those in places of hostility and persecution against Christianity the ability to share without fear and proclaim the Gospel to any who will hear. Faith gives martyrs the ability to stand in their faith at the cost of their lives. Faith empowers people to let go when all they want to do is hold on. Faith fills those suffering and dying with great peace as they prepare to go home to the Lord. Many heroes of faith walk with us and have walked with us and their names are written in our Lord’s Book of Life. A little faith changes everything. Through a little faith, we may know peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
