Thomas answered and said to Him, “My Lord and my God!”
John 20:28, LSB
It is no small confession that Thomas made when he said these words. It was a realization of his prior disbelief and distrust of his brothers and an expression of devotion. When we confess, “Jesus is Lord,” we are making a statement of submission to one who has authority over our lives. The fealty given with these words is meant to convey the power Jesus Christ holds, and to confess Jesus as God is additionally a greater sign of submission. It is something for us to ponder as we seek to understand what it means for us to believe and trust in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. Where is He Lord in our lives, and how do we serve Him as Lord? These are difficult questions for most of us because our world is not one normally ruled by lords and kings. Yet, as followers of Christ, we confess that Jesus Christ is our Lord and our King, and He rules over all creation. We are His subjects and are to seek to serve Him with all of our lives as witnesses to His glory, power, and love, with the hope that we may lead others to His peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
