On the contrary, we have renounced shameful, underhanded methods. We do not operate in a deceitful way, and we do not distort the word of God. Instead, by proclaiming the truth clearly, we commend ourselves to everyone’s conscience in the sight of God.
2 Corinthians 4:2, EHV
One of the most troubling things that rears its ugly head in Christianity is the desire to “sell” the faith. What I mean is that we treat the Christian faith as something that we market to the world to build up the institutions in which we worship. This is nothing new and, I believe, this is what Paul was speaking to in his letter to the Church in Corinth. We should not change or hide the difficulties of our faith to make it more palatable to people. We are either called to Christ or we aren’t. It is the work of the Holy Spirit. We don’t want to do things to drive people away and we are meant to be going out into the world to tell others about Jesus and teach people the faith. Our message is the hope of Jesus Christ and the suffering on the Cross for our sins. We are meant to speak to the conscience of all and if they find themselves troubled because it challenges the way they desire to live it is the Gospel that will free them if they are willing to submit. Tolerance is the grace we give those who are caught in sin and repentance is the grace that brings them out of that sin. We are meant to love the sinner and hate the sin. This is where our hope lies in Jesus Christ, that He first loved us despite our sins and offered us forgiveness. There is no deception in Him and neither should it lie within us. It is in His truth we find our peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
