Then He said, “Go out, and stand on the mountain before the LORD.” And behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind tore into the mountains and broke the rocks in pieces before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake; and after the earthquake a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice.
1 Kings 19:11–12, NKJV
Elijah was blessed to have a close connection to God as His chosen prophet. Yet, Elijah still struggled in his calling as he felt alone and the threat to his life wore on him. God gave him a command to wait for Him in a cave. Here God’s presence would come, and He would communicate with Him differently. As God approaches, we see the chaos that comes. Nature reacts to God because of the rebellion that is within nature. We find that God’s voice is not in the chaos, but in the calm that follows. When we find our lives in chaos and we pray, we can await Him and His coming in the calm that He places on things. Jesus did this with the storm as the disciples were fighting to cross the Galilean Sea and we can trust it in our lives. Chaos threatens us every day and we may often feel as if all things are going terribly, but God calls us to wait for Him and to pray in the chaos. We can call out to Him knowing that He hears and lets the calming presence of His Holy Spirit calm our hearts and remove fear and trepidation. Let us seek out His presence at all times and shine out His light as we live in His peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
