John 17:4

“I glorified You on the earth, having finished the work which You have given Me to do.”

John 17:4, LSB

Jesus prayed these words just before His betrayal and arrest. He was praying this just as He was preparing for the great amount of suffering, He would endure for our sake at the hands of the Sanhedrin and the Romans. His teaching was just ending, but His work of saving us all was just about to come to its fulfillment. These humble words of submission are a reminder of how we are called to submit ourselves to our Lord. We are not saved by our actions but by His. We do not come to faith through our will, but the will of God who is calling us and has chosen us. Many witnessed the events on the Cross and were with the disciples when He taught but not all believed and many more were not willing to die for the faith. This was true then and continues to be true now. Christ’s work was finished by Him on the Cross and was passed onto all of us after His resurrection and ascension to go and make disciples. Our calling is to bring hope and promise to a dying world and give His peace.

Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
