If you will return, O Israel, says the LORD, return to Me. And if you will put away your abominations out of My sight, then you shall not be moved.
Jeremiah 4:1, MEV
It is hard to let go. This is the greatest difficulty that we face in humanity, as we like to cling to the things of our past. Throughout the Old Testament, you read of God’s attempts to call His chosen away from the things that are contrary to Him and into Himself. Repeatedly, we see them recommit to being faithful, and in a short time, we watch as they turn to idolatry again. The pattern continues to this day. We continually return to things that only bring disappointment and shame. Yet, these words remain true. God calls us to let go and remove those things that are abominable to Him from our presence. Sin is addictive and once it has its hold on us, it draws us in over and over. As with any addiction, it is best to have the objects of our addiction as far away from us as possible. Yet, it is not so easy as we are constantly being surrounded by it in our world. Each of us has some that are the same and some that are different and as the Church we are called to walk with one another and support one another in our journey. Our calling is to continually set aside those things, look to our Lord, and keep our focus on Him. It is a continual process in our lives as we look to be faithful to Him and cry out to Him when we fall. In this, we may know His peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
