But Jesus cried with a loud voice and gave up the spirit. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. When the centurion who stood facing Him saw that He cried out and gave up the spirit, he said, “Truly, this Man was the Son of God.”
Mark 15:37–39, MEV
Jesus’ ministry changed the lives of those who humbled themselves, but those with prideful hearts thought they had finally stopped the influence of Jesus, thinking Him to be just another rabble-rouser. Yet, the centurion came to know who He was with the events that followed His death. He heard the cry of Jesus and felt the power of that cry, which tore through the curtain in the temple that separated the Holy from the Holy of the Holies. Jesus, in His death, tore the liminal curtain for us also, as He opened the curtain so we may know the Father and be chosen by the Holy Spirit. He broke the barrier that kept Him from taking full residence in His chosen and bringing full transformation into the lives of His followers. The power of our Lord is not limited to a moment, but extends from this life into the next as He leads us into His kingdom and releases us from sin to live in His peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
