The LORD is good to all, and his mercy is over all that he has made.
Psalm 145:9, ESV
God is not cruel. Cruelty exists because of sin, and it isn’t God who desires it to be there, but He does allow it. Many ask, “Why does God allow bad things to happen to good people?” The assumption is that people are good. Hearts, sadly, may seek to be good, but our failure is often before us to truly BE good. God’s mercy is that He delays in taking out all the evil in the world, which will one day occur, to give opportunity for hearts to be turned toward Him and repented of their sin. The goodness of our Father is evident in the way He provides and gives us hope in His promises, which He has given to us, even though our hearts are not perfectly attuned to Him and do not always do that which He desires of us. God is even good to those who do not believe or trust in Him. He still provides rain and gives them opportunities to know love, build families, and even find success. He created those who will enter into His glory, and those who will not, and His love is there for all. He is just, and for that reason, not all will enter into His glory, but He gives all an opportunity to fully know His peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
