He said to them, “When you pray, say, ‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.’”
Luke 11:2, EHV
Prayer is the most basic aspect of faith, but so many people feel unprepared or unable to do so. Jesus taught the disciples this prayer as a basic formula for prayer and as a powerful prayer to humbly lift to our Lord. The great difference of this prayer from the prayers that may have been more common is the address He gives us, “Our Father.” It is a more intimate and relatable way to guide us in thinking of God. Not just fearful reverence but a familial relationship. Our Lord wants us to come to Him humbly as our Heavenly Father. He desires for us to pray to Him with confidence, knowing that He hears us and that He loves us. This is the power of the prayer and our guidance in how we should view God and our relationship to Him as His children. He does not forsake us, nor does He forget His promises. Through His Son, Jesus Christ, we have been claimed as His children and in Him we are forgiven and given entrance to His kingdom and into His peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
