“Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful.”
John 14:27, LSB
As Jesus was speaking to His disciples, they did not fully understand what He was giving them. As we walk in faith, we walk with the power of the Holy Spirit’s guidance and comfort. It is not the same as walking in our own strength which will waiver when confronted with hardship. Jesus was not saying that His disciples would live lives without conflict, but with an inner understanding that things are greater than what we see in the world. The peace which we receive in Christ is contrary to the ways of the world. It is not dependent on us but on Him. We can find great peace in the midst of the greatest storms. We can find peace when chaos erupts around us because we know that He is still in control. Unlike the Israelites wandering in the desert fearful of food and drink, we can walk in confidence that the well of our Lord’s favor and His providence will not run dry. This is because the well flows from us internally to replenish us as we pray. To fill us as we worship. To clear our minds as we read His Word. As the Word became flesh, so the truth of God has been revealed to all who will believe and in Him, we find our peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
