For by one offering He has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.

Hebrews 10:14, LSB

Not through our sorrowful hearts, we are forgiven, but through the sacrifice Christ made for us on the Cross. One can be saddened by the harm caused by sin, but still not know the forgiveness of Christ or even seek after His forgiveness. Yet, it is our Lord who redeems and renews us. Our Lord and Him alone forgives us and it is through Him we may know the fullness of our forgiveness. This is difficult for those who do not believe because our world is less forgiving. As we walk in Christ, we walk as a forgiven people. We are not excused to sin or from our past sins, that is the difference. The world may excuse sin for a time, but eventually, the debt will be called. Some sin may result in illness, but still others may cost our livelihood and reputation. In Christ, we have the promise of eternity that is given to us all in the forgiveness of our sins. As we walk with Christ, His call is for us to turn away from further sin and turn into Him as we reach out into the world as witnesses and recipients of His promises. This is the new life we are offered through our Lord and Savior. It is in the hope given to us in His promises that we may find His peace.

Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
