He said to them, “This kind cannot be driven out, except by prayer and fasting.”

Mark 9:29, EHV

Prayer and fasting are two things that we can never do too often, yet often are not done in great frequency. We may fast over Lent. We may take days of prayer or time to pray, but how often do we truly fast and devote our time to extended periods of prayer? Jesus said this to the disciples because our nature as a people is to think that the power that is given to us by God is only through faith. However, the greatest power God has given us in our prayer and fasting is powerful to help us focus our prayers more fully. For the young boy, the power over him was not strong because of a lack of faith. The father may have been very faithful and believed strongly in God. The same was true with the disciples. The disciples were strong in faith as they were sent out and did many great things in the name of Jesus. It was in their lack of prayer and fasting for God’s power to be fully manifested in them in all things that He called them to do. Mind you, this is for God to direct. We can fast and pray all we want and if we are trying to do things not for His glory it will be of no benefit, but when we fast and pray for God’s will to shine through us, what greater glory can be shown? God is at work in us and through us who are His and in our time devoted to Him, He can do great things and show us fully His peace.

Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
