“Then the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom…Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour.”
Matthew 25:1,13, ESV
The parable of the ten virgins gives us a warning about our faith and our walk with Christ. It can be easy to become caught up in things that are not of our Lord. People can become busy doing a lot of “good” things and think that they are going to Heaven because of them, but their eyes are not focused on God, but on the world. The important thing is the Gospel and our need for it. The Gospel is given to sinners who recognize their need for a Savior. It is easy to become self-righteous and believe that all is well. Out of the virgins all of them, I am sure, made themselves beautiful and had spent time primping to be ready for the bridegroom, but only five brought extra oil for their lamps to greet him. It can be easy to think that all is well when the outside is prepared, but if the heart is not filled with the Holy Spirit, we will find the door to Heaven closed. All the good works in the world will do nothing for our salvation if Christ is not in the midst of them. If the Gospel is left to the side, they do nothing for anyone’s eternal life. Christ calls us to be prepared and know His Word, hear His truth, and share His Gospel, so all who hear may know His peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
