Quoting Proverbs 25:21, Paul is reminding Christians of our calling as people of God. We are not meant to be vengeful, but to seek to be merciful to our enemies. We know the punishments God has brought upon those wishing to destroy God’s people, like Sisera, who was received into the tent of Jael, and, believing he was receiving mercy, was killed as he rested. Jael was not of God’s chosen, but God utilized her to bring about His wrath. In Christ, we are not to desire God’s wrath on anyone, but He desires for us to shine his light into lives covered in darkness so that some hearts may be humbled and turn to Him seeking His mercy. In our giving of mercy and care, we may soften the hearts of those wishing harm and lead them into salvation in our Lord. As followers of Christ, let our lives not be a reflection of those who should be pitied, but of grace and mercy, and in so doing reflect our Lord’s peace.

Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
