But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the LORD sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the LORD looks on the heart.”
1 Samuel 16:7, ESV
We all know the adage, “Seeing is believing,” we are all predisposed to want to judge by what we see and how we perceive things. God is not this way. He knows our hearts. He knows our desires. We are unable to hide anything from Him. Now before we become nervous thinking that He must truly have an issue with us and, despite those things that have been done that we know would not make Him happy, He loves us. For those who seek His heart, He holds a special love. If you look at the life of David, you will find a very flawed man. Yet, God set Him apart. God anointed Him as His chosen and from His descendants we have the Messiah, our Lord Jesus. The outward appearance of David and looking at His life offers nothing particularly special. Many of us could look at His life and feel better about our mistakes, but that is not the point. God never justified David for his sins because He thought, “Well, at least David isn’t as bad as Saul.” God forgave David of his sins because when he was fully aware, he repented. David’s heart was in pursuit of honoring God no matter the circumstances. He did so clumsily and so will we. If our heart is in pursuit of bringing God glory, God knows that and it gives Him pleasure and in this, we may find His peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
