Now it happened that at this time He went off to the mountain to pray, and He was spending the whole night in prayer to God. And when day came, He called His disciples to Him and chose twelve of them, whom He also named as apostles.
Luke 6:12–13, LSB
In Christ, we have been given an example of a prayerful life. In our time in the Word and in prayer, we develop a closer relationship with God. Jesus often went alone to pray to the Father. As He walked this earth, He was submissive to the Father, though we know He was One with the Father. Jesus’ humility as He was in the flesh, walking with us, is the same example that we are called to hold. As we humbly pray and listen to the guidance given to us by our Lord in Heaven, we, too, will be led to do things for our Lord’s glory. As the twelve were sent out, they were given authority to do great things in the name and to the glory of God. Though we are not sent out like the first twelve named as Apostles, we are sent out with the authority of the Gospel just the same as they were given. The greatest miracle we will witness will be in those who are filled with the Holy Spirit and proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord. Our Lord calls us to pray and trust in the Father’s guidance as we shine out Christ’s peace to the world through His Gospel promises that lead us all to eternal life.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
