“I also say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of Hades will not overpower it.”

Matthew 16:18, NASB95

It can be easy to forget that Jesus came with a mission that was more than just the salvation of all mankind. He came to build His Church, which would be the bearer of His promise, His Bride. People transformed to withstand any attacks from Satan. Job spoke of this as He was being bombarded with misfortune as he cried, “I know my Redeemer lives!” We hear it as the bars ring out from Luther’s “A Mighty Fortress!” The continuous onslaught of the arrows of Satan and the lies of his minions fills our ears and attempts to fill our hearts with fear and trepidation; we can turn to our Lord, and He will strengthen us with His Word and His promises. The truth our Lord pours out emboldens our hearts and removes all fear from our minds. He unclouds our vision to clearly see the victory ahead. Satan thrives in our fear as he pokes to cause us to recoil and pull back, seeking to cause us to turn inward and leave those that are within his grasp to his will and ways. In Christ, we are reminded to resist and strive forward in proclaiming His message of new life and bringing more into His saving grace and peace.

Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
