In fact, if anyone hears the word and does not do what it says, he is like a man who carefully looks at his own natural face in a mirror. Indeed, he carefully looks at himself; then, he goes away and immediately forgets what he looked like.
James 1:23–24, EHV
When the Holy Spirit moves on your life, it brings about change. One may question the conversion of another if, after professing faith in Christ Jesus, they go back to living the same way they lived before their confession. When the Law bears down on us and we are freed in the Gospel, it is because the Law reveals to us our need for a Savior and calls us to turn away from those things convicting us into the warm embrace of the saving Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. To turn back is like a prisoner who, when set free, closes the doors of the cell behind themselves. The bondage that held us before Christ is not meant to hold us any longer. We are not to forget the saving grace our Lord has given us as we move forward. We are not meant to return to our addiction, but move forward every day, remembering how we have been freed as we have been changed through the Gospel of Jesus Christ and brought into His peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
