They said to Him, “Caesar’s.” Then He said to them, “Therefore, render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s; and to God the things that are God’s.”

Matthew 22:21, LSB

The two kingdoms – the civil and the spiritual – pull and tug at us in our lives as we are called to discern how we are to be led. Often, our wallets lead us as we struggle to discern our actions. Those wishing to ensnare Jesus with a question on taxes, which no one likes to pay, is a perfect example. So, Jesus reminds us of what it means to be faithful. We are repeatedly called to submit to our rulers and governing authorities and to honor their authority on issues related to our lives here on earth, while walking in the tension of being faithful to the spiritual aspects of our lives, which are under the authority of God. If those authorities come into contradiction, we are to put God’s authority first, while we are also to be prepared for the earthly consequences that our faithfulness may incur. It is this tension we are all walking in as we live and work within the world while seeking to remain faithful to God and be a light to those walking in darkness, so they may come to know our Lord’s peace.

Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
