Matthew 4:17

From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”

Matthew 4:17, ESV

After learning of John the Baptist's imprisonment, Jesus’ teaching changed as He became fully aware of how far adrift the faith leaders of God’s people were from God. In Christ, Heaven is closer than we think, as our Lord seeks to restore His creation and His people. His words shifted to draw people closer to the Father. His words were meant to prepare the disciples for what was to come for Him and the building up of the Church. It wasn’t that He was teaching anything that they should not have already known, but was revealing all that had been forgotten and clarifying what had already been taught. Our Lord calls us to this newness of life and gives us His Word of hope to show us the Kingdom. We are all called to turn away from the things of this world and turn to our Lord, who holds for us the keys to Heaven. It is always a process of letting go of our control and giving in to His. Through this, we shall see God and know our Lord’s peace.

Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
