“Six days you shall do your work, but on the seventh day you shall rest; that your ox and your donkey may have rest, and the son of your servant woman, and the alien, may be refreshed.”
Exodus 23:12, ESV
The world celebrates the workaholic. We use words like driven, hardworking, and enterprising as we watch families collapse, our earth being poisoned, and mental health declining. God commends hard work. He calls us to be driven in doing the mission He calls us to do. The Bible is full of enterprising heroes of the faith. But God calls us to take time to rest. As our bodies fatigue, so declines our quality of work. A time of rest is good not only for us, but also for all who work with us, including work animals. God calls us to set aside times for our soil to rest as well. All of this is not a call to laziness, but a time of refreshment and focus on Him, to raise up our families in the faith He gives us. Times when we can be reminded of the promises of our Lord and carry this promise through all generations, that all of our heritage will be grounded in Christ our Lord. In this, we can be witnesses to God’s love in our communities and shine Christ’s peace to all.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
