The apostles gathered around Jesus and reported to Him all that they had done and taught. He said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a secluded place and rest a while.” For there were so many people coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat.
Mark 6:30–31, EHV
Rest is valuable for our minds and our bodies. The wants of the world are never-ending. This is why our Lord gave us patterns to follow to help us avoid taking it all on. It is a reminder that we are to trust in Him and not in our own ability to effect change in the world. Only our Lord can save. He will fulfill all that is within His will, and we are to be mindful of His lordship. Rest is also a good pattern for us to model. To break away and find renewal and refreshment is vital to ministry and for all people. No one should feel it necessary to work all the time. Animals and the soil also need rest. Overworked people bring unhappiness and disunity, but to rest and trust in the Lord’s care refreshes souls and helps bring renewal in a world that yearns for revitalization, shining a greater light on our Lord’s peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
