He took the Twelve aside and said to them, “Look, we are going up to Jerusalem, and everything that is written through the prophets about the Son of Man will be accomplished.”

Jesus told his disciples everything that would happen to Him, but they did not understand. Without the revelation of the Holy Spirit our vision is muddled. This is why some read the Bible, listen to strong preaching, sit with powerful teachers, and still do not believe. Faith is not something we obtain through our efforts, but a gift given to us by God. When the Holy Spirit enters us and calls us to Himself by revealing the Father and the Son we are given faith. We can then exercise our faith and strengthen this gift further through study, worship, and prayer but it still is a gift given to us by God. The disciples did not understand why everything happened to Jesus as they did until the Holy Spirit entered them on Pentecost and God opened their hearts and minds. There are things within Scripture, we will not fully understand but God will continue to open our hearts and minds to gain a glimpse of what He intends for us to see as we are faithful in our walk with Him. In faith, we are called to trust and believe in Him and know He has something at work within us. We are being called to follow His way and seek after His will in all aspects of our lives. The Twelve were called to trust and follow as they watched the events unfold and later all would be revealed. This is our faith. This is our calling. This is our peace.

Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
