If you really fulfill the royal law according to the Scripture, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself,” you are doing well. But if you show partiality, you are committing sin and are convicted by the law as transgressors.
James 2:8–9, ESV
It is natural in our world for favoritism to be shown to people because of circumstances. With Christ, we are reminded by James not to act this way. Whether someone is rich or poor, their actions are to be seen through the eyes of Christ, and the help we may give them is as a brother or sister in Christ. Nothing is meant to be done because of the benefit they may or may not be able to give, but out of the purity of the Gospel. This is difficult because our nature is to seek favor with those who could do well for us and to build relationships with those who bring benefit. We, also, are to be careful not to offer more benefits to another because of their lack, but we are to care for the needs of another based solely upon the calling of our Lord to serve them simply for the sake of serving. As the Church, we are reminded that Christ’s eyes do not see things the same as worldly eyes, and our calling is to be ambassadors to all so more may enter into His glorious peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
