And He said to her, “What do you wish?” She said to Him, “Command that in Your kingdom these two sons of mine may sit one on Your right and one on Your left.” But Jesus answered and said, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I am about to drink?” They said to Him, “We are able.”
Matthew 20:21–22, LSB
Like the mother of James and John many struggle with the reality of the Christian faith. To be followers of Christ is not a way to living a popular and easy life, but there are often many struggles that we will be confronted with in the world. There will be decisions we will have to make that may cause us to stand out and may cause us to have to step away from things that may have once been a part of our lives or things others will want to lead us. It may bring mockery and derision. Unlike some positions that will bring you greater honor in the world, to follow Christ may cause us to take stances contrary to what is acceptable in society. We are not called to be this way to judge others, but we may witness to them the negative nature of the ways in which they are walking. If they do not accept, we are still called to love them but that does not come through participating or approving of things contrary to God. The mother saw the question she asked as a path to prestige for her sons and she wasn’t wrong, but the position that they would receive would come at great cost to them and the family. Our faith may cost us in certain ways in the world because we will not enter into certain spaces or follow certain ways, but our reward will be awaiting us as we enter into the glory of our Lord and know His eternal peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
