2 Timothy 2:15, ESV
The Word of God and its proclamation point to two things: the Law or the Gospel. Some Bibles have been created to try to divide that out for us by utilizing different colors, which is supposed to help the reader to know better when they read it. The problem is that it is not always that easy. Yes, there are some parts of Scripture that make a clearer distinction than others, but not always. For us as Christians, it is important to remember that the Law always points to the things we must do, like what Paul writes in his letter to Timothy, and some things point to what God has done for us and for our salvation, which is the Gospel. The sermon that tells us the ways we can be better Christians may sound nice and uplifting, but if it is all about what we must do, it is all Law and no Gospel, which leaves us hopeless and lost. As the Word is proclaimed, it is good to be reminded of our need for our Lord, but, most importantly, our souls long for the peace that comes in knowing our Savior, Jesus Christ, and this is the Word that saves as we journey this life into the next.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
