And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles. And all who believed were together and had all things in common.
Acts 2:42–44, ESV
We are meant to be united in our faith together in Christ. This was the calling to the early disciples as they walked with Christ, as they were met by the resurrected Christ, and at the Ascension of Christ. The early Church was aware of this and, for a time, lived it out. What we also know is that shortly after this, disputes began to arise, and cracks formed. A united Church is dangerous to the fallen world. Satan will find ways to fracture the body and cause believers to distrust one another. Persecution will cause dispersion, and some of the less mature in faith will fall away; like young lambs, they will become separated and devoured by the wolves of the world. This is the reality of our calling, and a return to being unified in the Word and to praise God in community. God calls us away from listening to the worldly whispers and to listen to His promises. To be louder than the cacophony of woes we see in the world and proclaim His Gospel, devoting ourselves to bringing His message to all who will hear and finding rest in His peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
