“But we believe that we will be saved through the grace of the Lord Jesus, just as they will.”

Acts 15:11, ESV

After being challenged by those who wished to establish standards beyond our Lord Jesus Christ’s command to make disciples through baptism and teaching, Peter gave these words to those demanding circumcision as a sign. It is the heart of many to try to make the gift of salvation more than the promises of God. We like to make it about us and our actions, and not the signs and wonders our Lord placed before us. We like to make Baptism more about us and less about our Lord, and the conversion about our decisions and changes. God wants us to submit ourselves to Him and realize the gift that He has given, but it is less about what we do and more about what God has done. Peter saw this and spoke these words to the hearing of all the early Church at great risk to himself. It is meant to remind us of the grace given to all of us through our Lord, as we are reminded of the calling placed on us by God and seek to draw others into His peace.

Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
