Every word of God is tested; He is a shield to those who take refuge in Him. Do not add to His words Lest He reprove you, and you be proved a liar.
Proverbs 30:5–6, LSB
God’s Word can be difficult. If we don’t want to believe a certain thing it can be easy for us to reimagine what God is saying. The reverse is also true if there are things we want to believe that aren’t there. We are to be careful in our discernment and be cautious of what we teach and what we are being taught, but everything is meant to be tested to the Word. As we interpret Scripture, we are meant to do so with Scripture as our guide. If we read something that doesn’t match other portions of Scripture, we are reminded by our Lord to rethink our interpretation and not place our flawed understanding above the Word. This is the difficulty that many of us face when we study the Word and new ideas are brought to light. Be cautious of new ideas and look to the Word as a whole seeking wisdom from God and in this we may know His peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
