Matthew 6:33

“But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.”

Matthew 6:33, NKJV

It can be hard to put God first, especially when it may cost us something, but this is what we are called to do as followers of Christ. Silence is often our deadliest poison, as we avoid difficult conversations and fail to proclaim the Word for fear of retribution from those to whom we speak it. We unwittingly create an idol of the desire to be perceived as nice and watch as people profane the name of God. We may not commit the sin of commission, but we are guilty of the sin of omission. This difficult reality is true for all Christians, no matter their station in the Church or in the world. It is a reality and a struggle that our Lord knew we would face as He was calling His disciples to this when He walked with them, and we are reminded of it as His disciples today. We are to worry less about the things of this world and keep all people comfortable and happy, but are called to speak words of truth and life, so that they may come into the peace of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
