In fact, it is God who is working in you, both to will and to work, for the sake of his good pleasure.
Philippians 2:13, EHV
In verse twelve, it tells us to “work out our salvation with fear and trembling.” This doesn’t mean that we are responsible for our salvation, but realizing the work that God is doing can help to still the rebellion that often resides in our hearts. We are the ones who resist God’s calling because it calls us to be different and is not always comfortable. Going to church every Sunday isn’t always what we want to do. There are many things we can do besides that and sometimes it feels like that is the only opportunity to rest. Yet, God calls us to be different. He desires for us to live our lives differently, not just on Sunday mornings but every moment of every day. He wants us to stand out and be set apart. He wants our words and actions to reflect Him at all times not just when it is comfortable. This can cause a struggle to arise within us, but our Lord has claimed us and to realize this and humbly submit ourselves to His will is what the calling He holds on our lives and reflects our Lord’s prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane as He submitted His will to the will of the Father. In Christ, we are called to submission and set aside the old sinful self so Christ’s work may shine out through us so others may come to know His peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
