A man’s steps are from the LORD; how then can man understand his way?
Proverbs 20:24, ESV
Our Lord gives us perfect guidance, but inside of us lies the memory of the sin in the garden, “Did God really say?” With this, we distrust our Lord and fight Him in His guidance of us. We struggle to trust the Word as being a reliable guide and easily stumble into sin. God does not lead us to sin, but always guides us along His pathways and calls us to follow His steps. As we are more in His Word, the steps become clearer. Like a dancer first learning the steps, we will move awkwardly, and the way of the Lord may feel strange. It is indeed leading us out of the well-trodden paths of our world and into the narrower steps of our Lord. The thorns and the thickets of the world encroach upon His path, but as we remain with our Lord, He will open to us a new vision, and each step will become clearer. It is He who brings understanding. It is He who shows us the way which He desires us to go. It is He who opens to us the gates of Heaven and the way to eternal peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
