Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin.”
John 8:34, ESV
Sin is a liar. It entraps and ensnares through the guilt and shame that it brings, but once it gets hold of us, it does not like to let go. Sin is an addiction that beckons us to return. Sin, however, only takes, for every momentary feeling of enjoyment, it robs us of true joy. Jesus Christ is the only way out. He is the only one who can free us from the sense of dread that comes upon us when the desire to step away begins to falter, and the siren call of sin rings in our ears. We believe we have freedom. We are convinced that our will is our own, but our will is either driven into the captive hold of sin or into the renewing embrace of Christ. The bondage of our will becomes evident as we either submit and humble ourselves to the will of our Lord and Savior or fall prey to sin's grasp on our lives. It is only in our submission to our Lord that we find the freedom of Christ’s love and are led into His peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
