Do not be drunk with wine, for that is reckless living. But be filled with the Spirit. Speak to one another in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord. Give thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, being submissive to one another in the fear of God.
Ephesians 5:18–21, MEV
God wants us to live our lives with our eyes wide open and aware of all that is happening in our world. Yet, we are also meant to be full of praise and worship in our living together. This is contrary to many in the world, as we see how we like to relieve ourselves of reality. This is not different from the past, and it has been a part of our fallen nature as we seek escapes through alcohol, drugs, and all kinds of debauchery. So, here we are reminded by Paul to keep our hearts focused on that which feeds us by praying, singing hymns, and being in the word of God. In all this, we may lift each other's spirits and return our focus to the most important thing that will bring new life to the world. We are called to be different from our neighbors who are not in the faith to be attractive to them. As ambassadors of Christ, we are meant to live our lives differently, and we are called to bring others to praise our Lord and build up those we see struggling with the words of Christ, let us sing His praises so others may know His peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
