For godly sorrow produces a repentance without regret, leading to salvation, but the sorrow of the world brings about death.
2 Corinthians 7:10, LSB
Sin and the world are killers. Christ came to help remedy this for all of creation. When we realize our sins and are filled with sorrow and grieve the sin we have committed, we find forgiveness awaits us, and with that comes the promise of new life. Our Lord sought to bring us this and what had been hoped to produce in His chosen people and beyond. When the people of Israel faced the consequences of sin there were periods of repentance and mourning, but sadly with them and the world, this mourning is only temporary. Unfortunately, we often find the world lamenting the loss of worldly things and not turning back to God. Death has no victory over those who die in Christ, but how often do we see a desire to reflect on the life and not the faith? Our hearts are not meant to be overly burdened by the things of this world, but to seek to bring about restoration through faith in Christ. To grieve the things that have fallen and not the sin that caused their falling is where we often live. We lament the “good old days” and forget the sins of those days that led to what we see today. As our hearts turn more to repentance, the sorrow that we feel may be lifted because the face of our Lord reflects back to us His forgiveness and in this, we may find peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
