In all things show yourself to be an example of good works. In your teaching show integrity, seriousness, and sound speech that cannot be condemned, so that the one who opposes us will be put to shame, because he has nothing bad to say about us.
Titus 2:7–8, EHV
Although good works are not necessary for salvation, they do not excuse us from doing those works to help our neighbors and our communities. We are called to be a reflection of our Lord to those who do not yet know Him. Our lives are meant to model what has been given to us in the Word. As a light in the darkness, we are meant to appear differently. This does not mean we will live perfectly, but the more we live out our faith, the less we will reflect worldliness. Salvation is through Christ, and God does not need our good works, but our good works are for our neighbor that they may come to know the glory of God. As followers of Christ, our lives are to reflect the one to whom we belong. To live above reproach is to live with integrity. We don’t need to hide things, nor do we need to be afraid of our imperfections. As we live in full reliance on our Lord, we are better able to see our neighbor, and the desire to alleviate suffering grows. We no longer wish to serve only our own needs, but are called to the care of our neighbor and together enter into Christ’s peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
