If a man vows a vow to the LORD, or swears an oath to bind himself by a pledge, he shall not break his word. He shall do according to all that proceeds out of his mouth.
Numbers 30:2, ESV
A vow should never be made lightly, and an oath should not be given without deeply thinking about what you are agreeing to. Words have meaning, and we should be cautious about how we use ours. This is something that seems to have been lost on the hearts of so many now and throughout history. Far too often, we find people trying to parse their words in such a way that they truly are saying nothing. Agreements are quickly made and more quickly broken. Relationships suffer because trust is a foreign concept, as we are taught to be watchful of ourselves rather than look out for what is best for the community. Bygone are the deals made with a simple oath or promise, but now all things must be put to paper with language that must be precise, with every loophole covered, for it to be worth anything more than the paper it is printed on and the ink that forms the words. In Christ, we can trust Him and His promises because He is one who keeps His word, and we are called to know Him and enter into His peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
