For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths.
2 Timothy 4:3–4, ESV
That is the issue of idolatry. It can easily be wrapped up to look like the one, true God, but only end up being a worthless imitation. It happened at the time of Paul and is what caught the Israelites throughout the history we find revealed throughout the Old Testament. It is easy to become distracted. We don’t like to feel we are wrong, and when something is taught that helps us feel like the things we want to believe are right, if we are not careful, it will deceive us. Ears can easily become closed to the truth and become bound up in the lie of charismatic false teachers. As followers of Christ, we are reminded to be cautious and remain vigilant to stay true to what is revealed within Scripture, testing everything we hear against the Word of God. God’s Word is always our guide, and in it we seek to remain in line with the truth God has given and be a light to others that leads to His peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
