Romans 13:1

Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God.

Romans 13:1, NKJV

All authority comes from God. Does this mean God approves of evil leaders? No, but God does allow evil. This is hard for many to comprehend. Paul was imprisoned while writing these words. During all the years of imprisonment, Paul wrote, and he evangelized. We don’t know how many soldiers and leaders came to the Christian faith because of Paul. The imprisonment wasn’t good, nor was what happened to him and many of the Apostles and followers of Christ throughout history, but we know their stories. We know them because of the results of their ministry. Christ was not lost in their suffering, and their lives were transformed through their submission. Our submission to the law of the land is our witness when we face punishment for our submission to God and His authority, in which our Lord’s power is glorified, and the peace into which He leads us is put on full display.

Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
