But no one is able to tame the human tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people, who are made in the likeness of God. Blessing and cursing come out of the same mouth. My brothers, these things should not be this way.
James 3:8–10, EHV
Anger boils up inside, and we say the things that we, deep in our hearts, know we should not say. This is the nature of our fallen world and highlights our need for Christ. Not all express their anger in the same way, but the stilling of our tongues is hard. It is why we have mothers telling their children, “If you don’t have anything nice to say, it’s best not to say anything.” This is our nature, and it is this nature that we submit to our Lord. He can correct and change our hearts. He makes us into a new creation, and He alone can change our hearts and tame our tongues. This side of Heaven, we will fail and fall short. This does not excuse our failure, but gives us comfort in the forgiveness of our Lord and brings us to pray that He still our tongues and put in our mouths words that proclaim His glory, so we may be a light to others, leading them to His heavenly Kingdom and into His glorious peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
