The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.
Proverbs 1:7, ESV
One of the most dreaded things about going to the doctor is stepping on the scale and seeing the number that appears. It’s not as though I am unaware that I have not made the choices throughout the year that would make that number look better. I try, but old habits are easy to fall back into. The same is true for us in faith, and the fear that we are called to have for the Lord is a realization of our inability to hide anything from Him. Just like the number on the scale, I can try to justify myself or argue against it, but in the end, it will be what it is, and I will have to listen to the recommendations on what to do again. We know what God desires of us and how we are meant to live. Thankfully, the graciousness of God is abundant and washes over us, but we are not excused for our failures. We are forgiven and called away from continuing in them, as we become more aware and focused on serving our Lord and seeking His peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
