Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to God’s wrath, for it is written: “Vengeance is Mine. I will repay,” says the Lord.

Romans 12:19, MEV

Many stories and action movies are centered on the avenging parent, sibling, spouse, or child going after the person who took the life of their loved one. It is a part of our human condition. God established cities of refuge in Israel to protect those who accidentally took a life from the blood avenger because of it. One thing that is true with revenge is that it creates a cycle of violence. Most often, in the pursuit of vengeance, there is usually collateral damage, and innocent people are harmed or killed. Paul teaches us to be different, as God placed a reminder in his heart of who is in charge. We know God’s wrath will come; our prayer is that it is not upon us or any of our loved ones. Our calling, as followers of Christ, is not to be pacifists but to seek protectors and bearers of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Ultimately, our calling is to be the protectors of life, here on earth and into eternity. Forgiveness is a central part of our faith and leaves no space for vengeance on our part, but to forgive and give it over to God so we may know and share His peace.

Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
