Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence? If I ascend to heaven, You are there; If I make my bed in Sheol, behold, You are there.
Psalm 139:7–8, LSB
The all places and all time presence of God is scary for many because not only does God see the good things we do, but the bad. We can’t put on a front for God. Our lives are on full display and not just the social media highlights. He sees us at our best and our worst, but He still loves us. He desires for us to give all things over to Him and know His love for us. When we confess our sins instead of trying to hide from Him like Adam and Eve in the Garden, we will find His forgiving and gracious presence. What angered God about His chosen people, Israel, was that they did things God had told them not to do, even with His presence close and visible. Since the Fall, we have a sin sickness which causes us to flee from God instead of to Him. Like animals fearful of the roar of the lion, we hear God’s voice, and instead of running to it, we run into the pack of lionesses waiting opposite the roar, ready to devour us. We can’t truly run from God, and we most certainly cannot hide from Him. Yet, our Lord does not want us to be afraid of Him, but to turn to Him and away from our sin and truly come to know His peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
