And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.”
Matthew 28:18–19, LSB
This is the meat of who we are as followers of Christ. For many the discipleship journey begins at Baptism, but much of this is based on understanding how the calling comes. As the early Church grew, households were baptized, and it was the responsibility of the head of each household to be discipled and to disciple their home. This responsibility never truly changed, but the hearts of people did. Our Lord is calling us to Himself and desires us to walk in the waters of our baptisms teaching all He places in our paths. We raise disciples of Christ by discipling. There is no shortcut. We teach the Bible, share the faith, pray, and gather in regular worship with our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ. That is our calling as disciples. The early Church gathered daily but changed to weekly for many over time. This is the pattern of life as we await the return of our Lord. As we enter the end, God calls us to be closer to Himself and the world calls us away. For those of us who stick to the Word and read, we find the words of our Lord to continue to be timely and see the warnings come to life, but let us lift each other up to be faithful to the calling our Lord left to us and continue to raise up those whom our Lord has called in our Christian walk and know His peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
