“The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up. Then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls, who, on finding one pearl of great value, went and sold all that he had and bought it.”
Matthew 13:44–46, ESV
One of the saddest statements that I have heard is, “Church is boring!” We have the most captivating story to tell and the greatest treasure to share with the world, yet for many, it is a dull thing. The story of Christ and the salvation He has brought to us is the greatest gift we can ever receive. Our faith is more exciting than any other epic tale ever written; its influence extends into all others. Throughout Scripture, we find accounts of God’s love being poured out for a rebellious people, mercy extended beyond measure, and yet, people still get caught up in other things that lead them down false paths. Once sold out to our Lord, however, we find enraptured souls that the world does not understand, as they criticize them for all that they have given up. For the man who bought the field or the other the pearl, most would speak more to what they gave up instead of how much they had gained. Our Lord desires us not to seek the gain of this world, but only in Him, because Christ’s treasure is eternal, while all others waste away into rubbish, and this is where we are called to find our peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
