Now having been questioned by the Pharisees as to when the kingdom of God was coming, He answered them and said, “The kingdom of God is not coming with signs to be observed, nor will they say, ‘Look, here!’ or, ‘There!’ For behold, the kingdom of God is in your midst.”
Luke 17:20–21, LSB
There have always been those who focus more on trying to figure out when the end is coming while missing the work that God is doing in the here and now. We can look at the world and complain about how things are going “to hell and a handbasket,” or we can focus on proclaiming the Gospel. Jesus didn’t want us focusing on the end, but to live in the realization that as we walk with Him, we are walking on the kingdom path. When it comes to the End Times, our calling is simple: continue the work which our Lord calls us to do and trust in His mercy and care. Like Daniel and his friends in Babylon, if faith in God and doing what God has called you to do, and the laws of society contradict, stick to God’s ways and be willing to face the consequences. If the consequence is death, pray and know that whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord’s. The kingdom of God is with us, as we know the Lord is with us. Nothing can separate us from Him, and our calling is to walk with Him all our days and know His peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
